BOGO

Buy One Get One (BOGO) campaigns are widely used promotional strategies, offering customers an additional product or service at no extra cost or at a discount. This article outlines the most common BOGO scenarios.

  1. BOGO: Buy one get one free.

  2. BOGO: Buy X get Y for free up to $100.

BOGO: Buy one get one free

In this BOGO use case, if a customer has one product in the cart, the second one is added to the cart for free.

Campaign workflow

When a customer applies the discount code at the checkout, Voucherify checks if there is at least one predefined item in the customer's cart. If the customer has at least one item added, Voucherify adds one more item for free.

Voucherify setup

Using the dashboard, you need to create the following elements:

  • The product offered for free.

  • Campaign of unique discount coupons (bulk codes)

Step 1: Add a product

If you don't have a product added to your account yet, you can do it in the Products menu in your dashboard or use a dedicated API endpoint.

Step 2: Create a campaign

Before you create a coupon campaign, make sure you're familiar with the Voucherify basics and the campaign builder:

Create a new unit discount coupons (bulk codes) campaign with optional validation rules that secure incentives and the campaign budget.

Campaign settings

In the campaign builder, set up basic campaign settings.

In the Campaign details step:

  • Provide campaign name.

  • Choose the bulk codes

  • Check Customers will be allowed to join only once option to ensure that a single customer can be assigned only one code from the campaign.

  • Check Auto-increase voucher count so that new codes are provided to new customers when the initial code batch runs out.

  • Set Code redemption limit to 1. As a result, each unique code can be redeemed only once.

In the Time frame step, you can set start and expiration dates that define when the codes are active and can be redeemed. You can modify the expiration date once the campaign is on.

Discount settings

Set in the Campaign builder > Discount value step.

Each unique coupon code gives one free product chosen in the discount settings:

Choose Bundle as a type of discount and select the product you wish to discount. In this case, it will be a Small Cappuccino and set the minimum quantity of products to 1.

For the discount effect, choose Rewards > Free Products: Always add new units items. This way, during the redemption, Voucherify adds items to the cart in the number defined by the unit quantity. Select Small Cappuccino again, and set the unit quantity to 1 as before.

Once set up, save the campaign.

Discount redemption

When a customer makes a purchase with a unique discount code, Voucherify checks the cart against the applied settings. If all conditions are met, the discount is applied to the customer's order. The discount value is equal to the price of the item attached to the discount code.

This type of BOGO campaign can also be set using a generic code and auto-applied promotion

  • Generic code is a single discount code for multi-use that you can share with your audience.
  • Auto-applied promotion offers a discount applied directly to a customer's cart without a promo code.

Both generic codes and promotions support unit discounts and validation rules.

BOGO: Buy X get Y for free up to $100

In this campaign, if a customer has at least one product from a particular product collection in the cart, products from another collection are purchased for free. Customers can have many discounted products in the cart, but their subtotal can't be more than $100. In this scenario, products are validated dynamically using metadata and don't have to be defined in your account.

The customer needs to add at least one product from one category to the cart. Therefore, if a customer adds products from the second category to the cart, they will be purchased for free with the discount code (up to $100).

Voucherify setup

Using the dashboard, you need to create the following elements:

  • Product collections built with metadata added previously to the metadata schema.

  • Campaign of unique coupons (bulk codes) with 100% off discount.

Step 1: Create product collections

You need two dynamic product collections. The first one defines criteria for items required in the cart, and the second one defines criteria for items that qualify for a discount.

To create product collections, go to the Campaign Hub section -> Product Collections and choose Create collection

You can also create collections in the Campaign Manager when attaching validation rules to your coupon campaign.

Step 2: Create a campaign

Before you create a coupon campaign, make sure you're familiar with the Voucherify basics and the Campaign Manager:

Create a unit discount coupons (bulk codes) campaign with validation rules that secure incentives and the campaign budget.

Campaign settings

In the campaign builder, set up basic campaign settings.

  • Set Code redemption limit to 1. As a result, each unique code can be redeemed only once.

Discount settings

Set in the Campaign Manager > Discount value.

Choose Bundle as a type of discount and select the product collection you wish to be included in the order. In our case it will be an Audiophile Zone collection and set the minimum quantity of products to 1.

For the discount effect choose Product discount -> Percent discount: Apply discount to item subtotal. Set the percent of discount to 100% and the maximum discount amount to $100. Then, choose the collection that is going to be discounted. In this case it will be Musify Premium.

Once set up, save the campaign.

Discount redemption

When a customer makes a purchase with a unique discount code, Voucherify checks the cart against the applied settings. If the order item meets the criteria for discounted products, the code is applied, and the item is purchased for free (100% discount). At the same time, Voucherify ensures that the discount value will not exceed $100 even if the amount for discounted products is higher.

Variants

This type of BOGO campaign can also be set using a standalone code and an auto-applied promotion:

  • Generic code is a single discount code for multi-use that you can share with your audience.

  • Auto-applied promotion offers a discount applied directly to a customer's cart without a promo code.

Both generic codes and promotions support unit discounts and validation rules.
