Voucherify loyalty programs offer points expiration, which determines the activity period for loyalty points. Points expiration feature in your loyalty program is optional. If enabled, you can precisely choose when unredeemed points should be deleted.

Overview

Points expiration can be configured in the campaign manager for loyalty programs, and if it is disabled, customers will have unlimited time to use points. You can round up the points expiration date to a specific period after the earning activity, such as the end of the month, quarter, half-year, year or a particular month. This sets the date when the points can no longer be spent.

The points expiration date is always calculated based on the activity date as follows:

  1. First, to the activity date there are added defined N months (N >= 0),
  2. Then, the date calculated in the previous step is rounded up according to the defined rounding option (if any).
Points expiration date nuances

Not all months have the same number of days. Voucherify handles these cases by rounding down the expiration date to the last day of the month in which the points are due for expiration. In particular, for points accrued on the 29th, 30th or 31st day of the month, the expiration date is rounded down to the end of the month. So, for example, points accrued on 31.01.2021 with one month expiration period will expire at the end of 28.02.2021.

1. Daily basis

In this option rounding option is disabled, so effectively, points can expire on any day in the year.

Example 1: 

Points are valid till the end of the day. Points validity: up to 24 hours. 

  • 10.01.2023: The customer earned 100 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 10.01.2023 (10.01.2023 + 0 months = 10.01.2023).
  • 11.01.2023: Points expiration: 100 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.
  • 23.01.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 23.01.2023 (23.01.2023 + 0 months = 23.01.2023).
  • 24.01.2023: Points expiration: 50 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.

Example 2: 

Points are valid for 1 month. Points validity: 1 month.

Points are valid for 12 months. Points validity: 12 months.

  • 10.01.2023: The customer earned 100 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 10.02.2023 (10.01.2023 + 1 month = 10.02.2023).
  • 23.01.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 23.02.2023 (23.01.2023 + 1 month = 23.02.2023).
  • 11.02.2023: Points expiration: 100 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.
  • 24.02.2023: Points expiration: 50 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.

Example 3:

Points are valid for 12 months. Points validity: 12 months.

  • 10.01.2023: The customer earned 100 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 10.01.2024 (10.01.2023 + 12 months = 10.01.2024).
  • 01.10.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 01.10.2024 (01.10.2023 + 12 months = 01.10.2024).
  • 11.01.2024: Points expiration: 100 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.
  • 02.10.2024: Points expiration: 50 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.

2. Monthly basis

In this option rounding option is enabled and set up to the end of each month, so effectively, there are 12 days in the year in which points will expire (1st day of each month).

Example 1:

Points expire at the end of the month in which they have been earned. Points validity: up to 1 month.

  • 10.01.2023: The customer earned 100 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 31.01.2023 (10.01.2023 + 0 months = 10.01.2023 + round-up till the end of the month = 31.01.2023).
  • 23.01.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 31.01.2023 (23.01.2023 + 0 months = 23.01.2023 + round-up till the end of the month = 31.01.2023).
  • 01.02.2023: Points expiration: 150 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.
  • 05.02.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 28.02.2023 (05.02.2023 + 0 months = 05.02.2023 + round-up till the end of the month = 28.02.2023).
  • 28.02.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 28.02.2023 (28.02.2023 + 0 months = 28.02.2023 + round-up till the end of the month = 28.02.2023).
  • 01.03.2023: Points expiration: 100 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.

Example 2:

Points are valid for at least one month and expire at the end of the next month from which they have been earned. Points validity: from 1 to 2 months.

  • 10.01.2023: The customer earned 100 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 28.02.2023 (10.01.2023 + 1 month = 10.02.2023 + round-up till the end of the month = 28.02.2023).
  • 23.01.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 28.02.2023 (23.01.2023 + 1 month = 23.02.2023 + round-up till the end of the month = 28.02.2023).
  • 05.02.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 31.03.2023 (05.02.2023 + 1 month = 05.03.2023 + round-up till the end of the month = 31.03.2023).
  • 28.02.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 31.03.2023 (28.02.2023 + 1 month = 28.03.2023 + round-up till the end of the month = 31.03.2023).
  • 01.03.2023: Points expiration: 150 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.
  • 01.04.2023: Points expiration: 100 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.

Example 3:

Points are valid for at least 12 months and expire at the end of the month. Points validity: from 12 to 13 months.

  • 10.01.2023: The customer earned 100 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 31.01.2024 (10.01.2023 + 12 months = 10.01.2024 + round-up till the end of the month = 31.01.2024).
  • 01.10.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 31.10.2024 (01.10.2023 + 12 months = 01.10.2024 + round-up till the end of the month = 31.10.2024).
  • 01.02.2024: Points expiration: 100 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.
  • 01.11.2024: Points expiration: 50 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.

3. Quarterly basis

In this option rounding option is enabled and set up to the end of each quarter, so effectively, there are 4 days in the year in which points will expire (January 1st, April 1st, July 1st, and October 1st).

Example 1:

Points expire at the end of the quarter in which they have been earned. Points validity: up to 3 months.

  • 10.01.2023: The customer earned 100 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 31.03.2023 (10.01.2023 + 0 months = 10.01.2023 + round-up till the end of the quarter = 31.03.2023).
  • 23.01.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 31.03.2023 (23.01.2023 + 0 months = 23.01.2023 + round-up till the end of the quarter = 31.03.2023).
  • 05.03.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 31.03.2023 (05.03.2023 + 0 months = 05.03.2023 + round-up till the end of the quarter = 31.03.2023).
  • 01.04.2023: Points expiration: 200 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.
  • 28.04.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 30.06.2023 (28.04.2023 + 0 months = 28.04.2023 + round-up till the end of the quarter = 30.06.2023).
  • 15.05.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 30.06.2023 (15.05.2023 + 0 months = 15.05.2023 + round-up till the end of the quarter = 30.06.2023).
  • 01.07.2023: Points expiration: 100 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.

Example 2:

Points are valid for at least one month and expire at the end of the quarter. Points validity: from 1 to 4 months.

  • 10.01.2023: The customer earned 100 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 31.03.2023 (10.01.2023 + 1 month = 10.02.2023 + round-up till the end of the quarter = 31.03.2023).
  • 23.01.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 31.03.2023 (23.01.2023 + 1 month = 23.02.2023 + round-up till the end of the quarter = 31.03.2023).
  • 05.03.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 30.06.2023 (05.03.2023 + 1 month = 05.04.2023 + round-up till the end of the quarter = 30.06.2023).
  • 01.04.2023: Points expiration: 150 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.
  • 28.04.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 30.06.2023 (28.04.2023 + 1 month = 28.05.2023 + round-up till the end of the quarter = 30.06.2023).
  • 15.05.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 30.06.2023 (15.05.2023 + 1 month = 15.06.2023 + round-up till the end of the quarter = 30.06.2023).
  • 01.07.2023: Points expiration: 150 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.

Example 3:

Points are valid for at least 12 months and expire at the end of the quarter. Points validity: from 12 to 15 months.

  • 10.01.2023: The customer earned 100 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 31.03.2024 (10.01.2023 + 12 months = 10.01.2024 + round-up till the end of the quarter = 31.03.2024).
  • 01.10.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 31.12.2024 (01.10.2023 + 12 months = 01.10.2024 + round-up till the end of the quarter = 31.12.2024).
  • 01.04.2024: Points expiration: 100 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.
  • 01.01.2025: Points expiration: 50 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.

4. Half-year basis

In this option rounding option is enabled and set up to the end of each half-year, so effectively, there are 2 days in the year in which points will expire (January 1st and July 1st).

Example 1:

Points expire at the end of the half-year in which they have been earned. Points validity: up to 6 months.

  • 10.01.2023: The customer earned 100 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 30.06.2023 (10.01.2023 + 0 months = 10.01.2023 + round-up till the end of the half-year = 30.06.2023).
  • 23.02.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 30.06.2023 (23.02.2023 + 0 months = 23.02.2023 + round-up till the end of the half-year = 30.06.2023).
  • 15.06.2023: The customer earned 30 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 30.06.2023 (15.06.2023 + 0 months = 15.06.2023 + round-up till the end of the half-year = 30.06.2023).
  • 01.07.2023: Points expiration: 180 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.
  • 28.08.2023: The customer earned 100 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 31.12.2023 (28.08.2023 + 0 months = 28.08.2023 + round-up till the end of the half-year = 31.12.2023).
  • 01.12.2023: The customer earned 20 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 31.12.2023 (01.12.2023 + 0 months = 01.12.2023 + round-up till the end of the half-year = 31.12.2023).
  • 01.01.2024: Points expiration: 120 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.

Example 2:

Points are valid for at least one month and expire at the end of the half-year or year. Points validity: from 6 to 7 months.

  • 10.01.2023: The customer earned 100 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 30.06.2023 (10.01.2023 + 1 month = 10.02.2023 + round-up till the end of the half-year = 30.06.2023).
  • 23.02.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 30.06.2023 (23.02.2023 + 1 month = 23.03.2023 + round-up till the end of the half-year = 30.06.2023).
  • 15.06.2023: The customer earned 30 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 31.12.2023 (15.06.2023 + 1 month = 15.07.2023 + round-up till the end of the half-year = 31.12.2023).
  • 01.07.2023: Points expiration: 150 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.
  • 28.08.2023: The customer earned 100 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 31.12.2023 (28.08.2023 + 1 month = 28.09.2023 + round-up till the end of the half-year = 31.12.2023).
  • 01.12.2023: The customer earned 20 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 30.06.2024 (01.12.2023 + 1 month = 01.01.2024 + round-up till the end of the half-year = 30.06.2024).
  • 01.01.2024: Points expiration: 130 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.
  • 01.07.2024: Points expiration: 20 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.

Example 3:

Points are valid for at least 12 months and expire at the end of the half-year or year. Points validity: from 12 to 18 months.

  • 10.01.2023: The customer earned 100 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 30.06.2024 (10.01.2023 + 12 months = 10.01.2024 + round-up till the end of the half-year = 30.06.2024).
  • 01.10.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 31.12.2024 (01.10.2023 + 12 months = 01.10.2024 + round-up till the end of the half-year = 31.12.2024).
  • 01.07.2024: Points expiration: 100 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.
  • 01.01.2025: Points expiration: 50 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.

5. Annual basis (end of the year)

In this option rounding option is enabled and set up to the end of each year, so effectively, there is only 1 day in the year in which points will expire (January 1st),

Example 1:

Points expire at the end of the year in which they have been earned. Points validity: up to 12 months.

  • 10.01.2023: The customer earned 100 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 31.12.2023 (10.01.2023 + 0 months = 10.01.2023 + round-up till the end of the year = 31.12.2023).
  • 23.02.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 31.12.2023 (23.02.2023 + 0 months = 23.02.2023 + round-up till the end of the year = 31.12.2023).
  • 15.06.2023: The customer earned 30 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 31.12.2023 (15.06.2023 + 0 months = 15.06.2023 + round-up till the end of the year = 31.12.2023).

6. Annual basis (end of the selected month)

In this option rounding option is enabled and set up to the end of a particular month, so effectively, there is only 1 day in the year in which points will expire (the 1st day of one month of the year).

Example 1:

Points expire at the end of February. Points validity: up to 12 months.

  • 10.01.2023: The customer earned 100 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 28.02.2023 (10.01.2023 + 0 months = 10.01.2023 + round-up till the end of February = 28.02.2023).
  • 23.02.2023: The customer earned 50 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 28.02.2023 (23.02.2023 + 0 months = 23.02.2023 + round-up till the end of February = 28.02.2023).
  • 01.03.2023: Points expiration: 150 points expired and are removed from the loyalty card points balance.
  • 15.06.2023: The customer earned 30 points. The expiration date for earned points is set to 29.02.2024 (15.06.2023 + 0 months = 15.06.2023 + round-up till the end of February = 29.02.2024).
